Water-repellents keep clothes drier longer, making them lighter, warmer and much more comfortable. H2OShield bonds the molecules of the water-repellent to the surface of the garment whilst still being environmentally friendly, with no intentionally added PFAS. The finish contains a minimum of 50% plant-based ingredients from a variety sources.

PFCs are a group of chemicals that are known for their water and oil-repellent properties and have been identified as persistent, bio-accumulative and toxic. Known as ‘forever chemicals’, these synthetics can take as long as 1,000 years to degenerate. Meanwhile, they can make their way into waterways and the natural environment – including our own bodies and those of other living organisms. Craghoppers have been proudly making products with no intentionally added PFAS since 2019.

The face fabric or outer fabric of a waterproof is the bit that makes the garment feel how it does and provides strength and durability. The waterproof membrane is on the back of the face fabric, which is what makes the garment waterproof along with having taped seams. A DWR (Durable Water Repellent), in our case H2OShield is added to the face fabric to encourage water to roll off rather than soaking in or “wetting out”. This combination is what makes a garment waterproof and breathable rather than just waterproof and not breathable like wearing a plastic bag! On garments that are not deemed waterproof, like a softshell, insulated jacket (like our Compresslite jacket) or even a pair of trousers, a DWR treatment can be added to help light rain and stains roll off but doesn’t turn the product into a true waterproof.
